【要旨】
1. "Modelling uncertainty in spatial data - a natural hazards example"
Assessing the ‘fitness for purpose’ of spatial data is a key issue in many GIS applications that seek to support environmental decision-making. Evaluating the uncertainty in different inputs and how this may propagate through modelling operations is central to evaluating the reliability of final results.
This talk will discuss an approach to evaluating different sources of uncertainty in the context of modelling volcanic mudflow hazards (lahars) on the island of Montserrat in the Caribbean. In particular, the implications of using different types of elevation model are examined and conclusions drawn regarding the priorities when using GIS in such a hazard management context.

2. "Landscape visualisation - origins and trends"
The creation of realistic or representative landscape views from digital map data is now an established technique in environmental management and decision-making. When used to convey information about a proposed or projected environmental change, it can be extremely valuable in bringing non-expert participants into the decision-making process.
Over the past decade, various developments in relation to data, hardware, software and the policy arena have helped to move the visualisation process from the expert domain towards more mainstream application, and images produced in this way are now commonly found in environmental impact assessments, development proposals, and other communication exercises.
This talk will trace the development of this type of visualisation, and examine the current state of the art. It will also consider the trends likely to affect future development in this field.
