1.  Angelika Koch :The Pleasures of Knowledge. Informing Sexuality in Edo Japan
The Edo period saw a proliferation of publications that provided information on sexuality and related phenomena. Whilst the amorous adventures of Ihara Saikaku`s "Man Who Loved Love" remain one of the best-known literary masterpieces of the period, and erotic "spring pictures" (shunga) are among the most notorious contributions to the visual arts, in the shadow of these Edo sexual icons there were also texts that treated sexuality in an informative way. In my PhD I propose to deal with such instructive discourses, addressing the issue of what sort of (often conflicting) sexual values they would have presented to readers.

3.Vanessa Tothill:
My graduate thesis aimed to demonstrate how mid-nineteenth century Edo playwrights and print artists used popular folk-heroes drawn from the lower social orders as vehicles to interpret the political and social uncertainty that marked the closing decades of the Tokugawa regime. The paper focused upon the social significance of the charismatic and sympathetic ‘outlaw’ figure and considered how theatrical representations of lawbreakers were used to convey a critical commentary on broader social themes and processes. I intend to further explore the relationship between official censorship - the ‘shita uri’ seal (シタ売) and an iconography of protest in the kabuki plays of this period.
