GIS offers the humanities exciting new opportunities to handle space, time and theme in an integrated manner by allowing us to gain an understanding of how things evolved differently in different places. This paper will describe how using GIS has already had a significant impact on quantitative historical research. It will then evaluate how it can be applied to other subjects in the humanities such as literary studies where the sources are unstructured texts rather than tables of statistics. It does this based on two contrasting examples, infant mortality in England & Wales in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and the early literature of the English Lake District. In both cases the new technologies have the potential to significantly enhance our understanding of well researched topics.
