The Book Diaspora:the Dispersal of Edo Illustrated Books to the West,1830-2008

This open seminar will investigate the massive transfer of Edo-period illustrated books to the West since 1830. This transfer combined with the loss of material remaining in Japan as a result of the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 and the bombing of Japanese cities in the Second World War means that the illustrated books in European and American collections surpass both in quantity and quality those remaining in Japan.
Among the topics to be considered will be:
the means by which these books reached the West;
the reception and treatment of these books in the West;
the formation of private and public collections of these book in the West;
the most important publications produced by Western students of these books;
the understanding — and misunderstanding — of these books in the West;
the role of new technologies in making these books more widely accessible; and
future prospects for the study of these books in Japan and the West.
