In this research, I wanted to develop a system to perform cross-period and cross-language information retrieval (CLIR) on multiple humanities databases. Retrieval of the desired information from diverse humanities databases is not a simple task due to differences and changes in languages that could cover different cultures and periods. Furthermore, humanities databases and their metadata schemas are very heterogeneous.
By combining the strength an “ancient-to-modern information retrieval” method; the Traditional Mongolian Script Digital Library, which enables users to access ancient historical documents written in traditional Mongolian script using a query in a modern Mongolian (Cyrillic), will be discussed.

Worawat Choensawat「Description and Reproduction of Stylized Traditional Dance Body Motion by Using Labanotation」

e have long been conducting researches on description and reproduction of body motion based on the Labanotation, and developed the system called LabanEditor. Labanotation uses a symbolic description and it is said that the notation can describe motions of each finger of a dancer. However, since, in this case, the resulting score will become extremely complicated, the fundamental description has been usually used. On the other hand, there are styles of motion peculiar to the traditional dances, and if we restrict ourselves to handling a specific class of dance, we can describe these motion with the basic notation scheme. Based on the aforementioned, we investigated a method of describing and reproducing CG animation of highly-stylized traditional Noh play with Labanotation. This has been realized by preparing motion template files which represent specific motions in Noh plays. We may handle any stylized dance motions other than Noh by preparing motion
template files of their own. In addition, we made an improvement in the functionality of LabanEditor as follows; importing VRML models of stages, background sceneries and characters for dancers which correspond to the various types of dance, and controlling the quality of motions. The evaluation showed that the system and the method had satisfied our initial requirements.

In our research, we specifically focused on assets of Yamahoko parade in the Kyoto Gion Festival, which was added to the UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009. On July 17 of every year, this festival in Kyoto in central Japan culminates in a parade of yamahoko, floats known as ‘moving museums’ because of their elaborate decorations with centuries-old tapestries, wooden and metal ornaments. The floats come in two varieties: yama with platforms decorated to resemble mountains, and hoko decorated by tall wooden poles that originally allured the Plague Deity to transform into a guarding spirit by people’s music, dance and worship. Big crowds gather at Shijo Street, the city’s main street, to watch this parade.
To reproduce Yamahoko parade in virtual environment, we generate a content that combines motion data of Yamahoko parade with visualizations of virtual Kyoto within a virtual world platform.
