【要　旨】
Prof. Max Moerman
Title: Geographies of the Imagination: Buddhism and the Japanese World Map
Abstract: This talk discusses the role of Buddhist cartography in the construction and contestation of worldviews in medieval and early modern Japan through a history of the earliest Japanese world map from the 14th through the 19th century. The continued popularity of this religious geography many centuries after European style world maps were in common use forces us to recognize the persistent role of the Buddhist imaginary in early modern Japan. This talk explores the ideological implications of this unusual cartographic trajectory and traces the map's genealogy to examine the multiple and contested visions of Japan's cultural, scientific, and religious world.
