「忠臣蔵」は、日本人であればだれもがそのストーリーを熟知する物語でした。だれもが知っている物語であればこそ、浮世絵師たちは豊かな発想力をもって工夫を凝らし、ユニークな作品を生み出しました。
　本展示では、その発想力豊かな作品をさまざまな切り口で紹介しています。実際の芝居の豪華な演出を反映させたものや、「仮名手本忠臣蔵」全段を１つの画面に巧みにまとめて描いたもの、洋風表現を取り入れたもの、読み解くのに相当の知識量を求められる見立絵、見れば思わず吹き出してしまいそうな戯画や擬人絵、子どもに限らず大人も十分楽しめるおもちゃ絵など、その多彩な作品世界はまさに「忠臣蔵文化」の広がりを具現化しているといっても過言ではありません。 Chushingura was a story that every Japanese person was familiar with. Because it was a story that everyone knew, the ukiyo-e artists used their rich powers of imagination to come up with all sorts of ideas and create unique works. This exhibition introduces these works of rich imagination from a variety of perspectives. Some of them reflect the lavish production of the actual play, others cleverly depict the entire Kanadehon Chushingura story on a single screen, and still others incorporate Western-style expressions. There are also mitate-e, which require a considerable amount of knowledge to understand, caricatures and anthropomorphic pictures that make you smile when you see them, and toy pictures that are enjoyable not only for children but also for adults. It is no exaggeration to say that the wide variety of works in this genre truly embodies the spread of the Chushingura culture.
