This symposium aims to discuss the global entanglements of textile pattern designs with an emphasis on katagami (Japanese stencils), batik, sarasa, and 'African Prints' between 1800 and 2000. While some of the historical relationships among these designs have received scholarly attention, the symposium provides an opportunity to rethink these relationships by considering Japan's position and roles in this global design circulation and related entanglements. The symposium therefore focuses on not only the global history of textile designs and techniques but also the various agents, such as textile manufactures, designers, traders, and local consumers as well as their economic, social, and cultural exchanges.
本国際シンポジウムは、型紙、バティック、更紗、「アフリカン・プリント」に注目し、過去2世紀におけるこれら連続するテキスタイル・デザインのグローバルな「縺れ」や連環を議論することを目的としています。バティック、更紗、「アフリカン・プリント」の歴史的関係についてはこれまでも議論されてきましたが、この関係に日本の型紙と、それに続く機械捺染産業をもう一つの核として加え、グローバルな「縺れ」や連環を再考するとともに、様々なエージェントの関連・関与を国際的な文脈から検討していきます。これにより、デザイン上の繋がりをこえた、経済的・社会的・文化的なグローバルヒストリー的繋がりも論じていきます。
