Abstract:

New forms of visualising two dimensional data such as pictures and maps are revolutionising the way we are able to analyse and communicate spatial data. In this talk, I will explain how we are using the power of the web to enable mapping to go online. I will show how various free software can be used to display pictures and maps introducing methods which let users build and share maps for themselves, building on the widely available software produced by Google in the form of Google |Maps and Google Earth. I will also show how these we can create maps using ideas from the wisdom of the crowd – crowdsourcing and then illustrate how we can use these ideas to build new representations of cities that scale from the finest level to the entire city, making use of 3D and related multimedia software.
