"What can geographers do to help doctors?
  The role of health geography."

　The medical model of health and wellbeing is based on knowledge of the physical and biological causes of disease, and sees 'health' as the absence of disease. Although the model has helped us make great strides in our understanding and treatment of a wide range of conditions, the model is narrow as it does not consider the wider influences on health, and in particular the role of the various environments we live and work in. In contrast the social or ecological model of health focuses on the social and environmental distributions of health and illness. Geographers have a role in developing this model as they are able to use tools such as Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to produce meaningful measures to help populate it of factors such as air pollution, access to hospital services, or the suitability of the environment for physical activity. Using examples from his own research Professor Jones will explore how, by advancing to the ecological approach, geographers are able to contribute to improving population health.
