The Ritsumeikan University Saturday Seminar Series will be planned by the Art Research Center (ARC), Ritsumeikan University, in the month of July 2025.

Topic: Ryukyuan Embassies Brought to Life in Scroll Paintings

Speaker: Seifman Travis(ARC Research Manager/Associate Professor, Kinugasa Research Organization, Ritsumeikan University)

Abstract:
 琉球王国は17-19世紀をかけて、使節を17回江戸へ派遣した。その使節は江戸城内、徳川将軍とのお目見え儀礼を通して、琉球を島津家の家臣みたいな位置、そして徳川幕府に対する朝貢国みたいな位置、との政治関係を再確認するためのことであった。江戸を初め、日本の様々な城下町や宿場町、または港町に、その使節団は一般町民も見えた行列も行って、琉球の文化性質や政治的な位置を見せた。
今回は、その行列を描く海外所蔵の絵巻数点を紹介して、行列そのものを儀礼の種類としても軽く論じる。
最後に、琉球使節と京都との関係について触れる。
