The Digital Humanities Center for Japanese Arts and Cultures, Ritsumeikan University is a Global Center of Excellent (COE) Program, designated by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science and Technology. Since the Center’s start in June 2007, we have been conducting education and research, aiming at creating a new type of the humanities that fully utilize information technologies so that we could bridge the gap between Japanese Studies in Japan and abroad, as well as lead the humanities in the future.The upcoming symposium is to summarize the Center’s research and educational activities in the past five years.

Dr. Kingkarn Sookhanaphibarn received the 2010 Bursary Award in Digital Humanities 2010.
We would like to congratulate Dr. Kingkarn Sookhanaphibarn, a postdoctoral fellow of the Center, on her 2010 Bursary Award in Digital Humanities 2010. These awards are to encourage new contributions to scholarship in the digital humanities and to involve new participants in the application of information technology in humanities research. She presented a paper "Visualization and Analysis of Visiting Styles in 3D Virtual Museums" at the Digital Humanities 2010, an international conference held in King’s College London on July 7-10.

Nine groups of the members of our Center will present their research at the forthcoming Digital Humanities 2009, which will be held at the University of Maryland, USA. This conference is one of the biggest and most prestigious ones for digital humanities in Europe and North America.

Welcoming distinguished scholars in various fields of digital humanities from all over the world as guest speakers, we sincerely hope that our 1st International Symposium on Digital Humanities for Japanese Arts and Cultures (DH-JAC2009) will provide us with a great opportunity not only to look back and reflect on our activities in the past two years, but also to find a path to take for the future of the Center.
