NicoGraph 2010, Singapore

I’m going to talk about my journey in Singapore, financial supported by Daikokai Program, Ritsuemeikan University. My purpose is to present my research paper in the Nicograph International Conference 2010, organized by Japanese Society of Art and Science. This conference was held in the Furama Riverfront during June 18-19, 2010. On the conference days, there are 25 papers and 19 posters as well as three invited speakers.

The conference started with Prof.Adrian David Cheok, who is currently the Director of the Mixed Reality Lab, National University of Singapore. His talk introduced the project aiming to develop new types of human communications and entertainment environments which can increase support for multi-person multi-modal interaction and remote presence. He gave an exciting example like a mother trying to assist her daughter’s cooking while both had been living apart together.

On the end of first day, the second invited speakers are Prof. Naoko  Tosa and Ryohei Nakatsu, who are from Kyoto University and National University of Singapore, respectively. They showed their research of customizing and animating the traditional Japanese paintings. Their project becomes an application on Apple iPhone and iPod Touch.

My presentation is in the third session, named CG animation. I talked about Realistic Expression of Body Motion and Environments in Laban Editor, which is one part of my dissertation. Of course, I was glad to present my work here; however, the talk is slightly limited to 12 minutes so as to allow a couple questions.

Last but not least, Prof. Nadia Magnenat-Thalmann, who is the third invited speaker, gave a talk about her great achieved projects relating mixed reality, modeling techniques, clothing simulation, etc.  One of her works, Virtual Life in Pompeii much impressed me.

NICOGRAPH 2010: Singapore

 2010年6月17日～21日，Singaporeにて開催されたNICOGRAPH 2010 に参加した．この国際会議では，“Virtual Yamahoko Parade in Virtual Environment” と題して研究発表を行った．
今回の派遣は，日本学術振興会「組織的な若手研究者等海外派遣プログラム」(大航海プログラム)，立命館大学・ＧＣＯＥ日本文化DH若手研究者助成金の助成を受けた．

IEVC2010 workshop: Nice, France

 On March 5-7 2010, The IIEEJ Image Electronics and Visual Computing Workshop 2010 (IEVC2010) was held in Nice, France as the 2nd international academic event of Image Electronics Engineers of Japan (IIEEJ). This workshop aims to exchanging the knowledge of the latest researches in all areas of image electronics and visual computing. 

Within this three day of the workshop, I have an opportunity to discuss with and listen to many researcher works. Most of the researchers are from Japan since this workshop was organized by IEEJ. There are 110 participates and more than 80 presenters including oral and poster presentations. Among the presenters, three oral presentations including myself were done by researchers from Ritsumeikan University.

My presentation topic is "Improved Segmentation of Motion Capture Data Using SMOTE". In this presentation, I introduced a new method for increasing the accuracy of an automatic segmentation of a long dance motion into unit motions. SMOTE, Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique, increases the classification accuracy of using neural networks in case of the training set including the minority class.

In this workshop, I have a great experience not only to conduct my ongoing researches but also to create a social network from professors, researches, Ph.D. students. Moreover, the experience in France is remarkable. Nice is a wonderful French Riviera city with a gorgeous coastline, beautiful traditional style houses and very modern city. This was my first visited to European country which gave me the opportunity to experience foods, cultures, life styles and many things which I never experience before.

I would like to thank all people in GCOE program that support my research and Professor Kozabura Hachimura, who is my supervisor.    

P.S If anyone plans for shopping in France, please beware that your favorite's shops maybe close on Sunday since most of the shop is close on Sunday.

IEVC2010 : Nice, France

国際シンポジウム: モーションキャプチャ技術と身体動作処理

1月23日（土）びわこ・くさつキャンパス（BKC）にて,GCOE「日本文化デジタル・ヒューマニティーズ研究拠点」デジタルアーカイブ技術研究班のモーションキャプチャ・プロジェクト主催による「国際シンポジウム: モーションキャプチャ技術と身体動作処理」(International Symposium: Human Body Motion Analysis with Motion Capture)が開催された．

本シンポジウムでは，プロジェクトメンバーを中心とした８件の研究発表に加え，招待講演，特別講演として海外から2名のゲストスピーカーを迎えて講演が行われた．

招待講演では，米ジョージア大学よりDavid Saltz 教授を迎え，“Virtual Vaudeville: Live Performance Simulation”と題し講演が行われた．
本講演では，同教授が開発した，１９世紀末のVaudevillian（ボードビル演者）の様子を詳細に再現しネットで配信する「仮想ボードビル」システムが紹介された．これでは，演技だけでなく，劇場や観客，観客の動作までもが詳細にコンピュータグラフィックスにより再現され，参加者に大きな感銘を与えた．

特別講演では，米Motion Analysis Studios社よりJeff Price 氏を迎え，“Real Time Pre-visualization of Production Quality Animation”と題し講演が行われた．本講演では，制作段階においても公開用映像に近いクオリティでプレ・ビジュアライゼーション（事前視覚化）技術とこの技術を利用したＴＶ番組の制作の様子が紹介された．

本シンポジウムには学内外から６０名弱の参加者があった．

じんもんこん２００９

　2009年、12月18日(金）、19日（土）の二日間にわたり、情報処理学会人文科学とコンピュータ研究会主催、文部科学省グローバルCOEプログラム共催のシンポジウム、"じんもんこん2009"（実行委員長：八村広三郎）が、本学BKCエポック21にて開催された。
　本シンポジウムでは「デジタル・ヒューマニティーズの可能性」の統一テーマのもとに、一般講演41件、ポスター発表11件、企業展示7件が行われた。参加者も160名を超えるなど、きわめて盛況な大会となった。本学の学生、若手研究者も数多く登壇し（講演12件、ポスター3件）、本学グローバルCOEにとって大きな意義を持つものであった。
　基調講演はカナダ・アルバータ大学のGeoffery Martin Rockwell氏が、"The Sparrow Flies Swiftly Through: From Humanities Computing to the Digital Humanities"という題で、従来の人文学からデジタル・ヒューマニティーズへの移行をスズメの機敏さに喩えて論じられた。特別講演は、本学歴史都市防災研究センター長の土岐憲三氏による「京都文化遺産の危機管理」という題で、文化遺産を後世に残していくために国家、社会、個人それぞれがなすべきことについて、ユーモアを交えつつ、熱く語られた。

UBCで研修を行いました

　今年の夏，University of British Columbia (Canada)のMAGIC研究センターに滞在していた間に，Cubeeとの研究プロジェクトに参加し，研究活動を行いました．MAGIC研究センターはその名前Media and Graphics Interdisciplinary Centreの通り，大学の幾つか研究室の先生より構成され，メディアやグラフィクスなど情報技術の開発研究活動を行っています．私が滞在している間では，各研究室からの学生および海外からの研究者がMAGIC研究センターに集まり，各研究プロジェクトに所属し，夏休み研究として研究を行っていました．その研究はユーザとコンピュータ間のインターフィスの開発に集中しています．例えば，Myviewとの研究プロジェクトでは，多視点から撮影したスポーツ映像をユーザ側に送り，各ユーザが好きな角度から映像を見ることができ，さまざまな情報を自由に得ることができます．このシステムは開発中で，来年のバンクバーで開催する予定の冬オリンピックでスポーツ中継の実用に目指しています．

　私が所属している研究プロジェクトでは，Cubeeとの擬似3次元ディスプレイを用いて，さまざま応用に向け，インタラクティブなインターフィスを開発しています．上図では，Cubeeプロジェクトのメンバの写真です（私が真ん中で，右から２番目はCV研の野村君です）．テーブルの上に置いているのはそのCubeeです．Cubeeが５つディスプレイで構成され，それぞれディスプレイが３次元物体の異なる視点から見た映像を示すことにより，Cubeeの中に３次元物体を見えるようになっています．私がこちらのDH研究プロジェクトに関連している３次元能面などをCubee中で表現することの以外に，Cubeeが３次元物体を操作できるツールとしてのシステムの構築を試みました．そのシステムは完全に完成するまでになっていないが，将来的に，ユーザが自由に３次元文化財を鑑賞および操作できるディジタル博物館システムに展開することが考えられます．この点についでは，生まれた新たな情報技術が文化の中に活かす，さらに発展することを言えるでしょう．

　今回の滞在で，異なる研究雰囲気を味わいました．UBCでは，積極的に学外との交流を推進しています．UBCで学位を取った方が同じ研究室に残られず，学外で研究職を探すことになります．そのことにより，各大学の間に学術交流ができ，研究成果が上げることができます．また，MAGIC研究センターでは，リーラスクな研究雰囲気の中で自由な研究発想を追求しています．さまざまなアイディアがぶつかりあい，小さな発想から大きな研究プロジェクトまでに成長する例が少なくではありません．UBCに滞在中に得た経験が現在および今後の研究にとっては宝のようなものだと思っています．

The 2nd Asian Joint Workshop on Information Technologies

On 9-10 September 2009, the 2nd Asian Joint Workshop on Information Technology was held in Ritsumeikan University, BKC. This workshop aims to exchanging the knowledge in information technology and collabolation between Ritsumeikan University and Dalian University. The first joint workshop was hosted by Dalian University last year.
