The 1st Shunga Project to celebrate

Shunga Books and Prints in Context

Symposium

"Shunga Books and Prints in Context"

This symposium is the first step in a three-year research project on shunga books, prints and paintings. The aims of the symposium are to introduce the project and to raise questions on the method and direction of shunga research. In August 2009 a similar workshop was held in London at the School of Oriental and African Studies in collaboration with the British Museum to inaugurate the British side of the project. This symposium takes a step further by bringing together a wide range of specialists to analyse and examine shunga from different perspectives.

Scholars of ukiyoe and literature will examine shunga from the perspective of their own disciplines and genres. This kind of comparative research putting shunga books and prints into the broader cultural and social context has not been attempted before.
