The Gion Festival Digital Museum 2020: The Past, Present, and Future of the Gion Festival

　　　　　

The Art Research Center (ARC) was established in 1998. Since then, the center's mission has been not only to conduct historical and social research and analyses of both tangible and intangible human cultural properties such as visual and performing arts and craftsmanship, but also to record, organize, preserve, and disseminate the research outcomes. Since its establishment, the ARC has brought together the wisdom of researchers from different fields on the premise of integration of and collaboration between the humanities and information science.

At the Gion Festival, which is one of the highlights of Kyoto's summer, we have so far promoted research projects that combine humanities and science with researchers and students from the fields of humanities and information science. The ARC has been digitally archiving and accumulating spatiotemporal information on a variety of tangible and intangible cultural resources related to the festival, including the Funeboko and Hachiman-yama floats, as well as the Nagae Family Residence, a large-scale Kyo-machiya designated a cultural property by the city of Kyoto.

The 2020 Gion Festival has unfortunately been greatly affected by the spread of the new coronavirus. In response to this, the ARC has decided to publish the results of its research on the Gion Festival so far to the local community as well as the general public, so that people in Japan and overseas can obtain a virtual experience of the festival despite the current situation. Therefore, we have launched this website under the theme of "The Gion Festival Digital Museum 2020: The Past, Present, and Future of the Gion Festival".

The Art Research Center sincerely hopes that visitors will learn and experience the history, current state as well as future potential of the Gion Festival in virtual time and space, and find great interest in this festival.
