Ritsumeikan Art Research Center(arcUP2039)O-edo Shibai Nenjiu Gyo-ji which consits of 26 pictures and a catalog was published in 1897.
30 years passed since Meiji-Ishin, remarkable nostalgia for Edo era can be seen among people, so many works that long for "Great Tokugawa era" had been created.
O-edo Shibai Nenjiu Gyo-ji is also one of them, and it takes up customs of Kabuki business during Edo era.
Around 1800, in Edo and Osaka, Kabuki Kanshou Annaisho, publishment that introduces not only about actors and Kyogen on a stage but also properties, organ and backstage, was published.
Ukan Sandaizue is known as its previous work, but in earnest, Shibai Gakuya Zukai by Takamura Takemura was published in Osaka in 1800, Ehon Shibai Nenju Kagami and Shibai Kinmou Zui by Shikitei Sanba was puslished in 1803.
O-edo Shibai Nenjiu Gyo-ji describes the actual conditions of Kabuki business in the end of Edo era based on these previous works.
