"O-edo shibai nenjiu gyo-ji" "Kurohuda"
Artist: 吟光 O-ban, Colour print
Ritsumeikan Art Research Center (arcUP2046)The black board hanged beside a stage was called Kurofuda which was used to deliver personal urgent message. First, theater staff calls out the name of person in question to come to the entrance, but if the person doesn't notice, they use Kurofuda with fee-charging in the end. In this picture, Tsuke-uchi, Kyougen producer (stage facilitator) holding Ki, and stage curtain were drawn in one picture which is a rare case in Kabuki pictorial materials.
Tsuke means beating a wooden clapper on stage left to exaggerate the moving sounds such as running and dropping something. In Edo, it was the job for Odogu, but in Kamigata, it was for Kyougen gata.
The person who beats Hyoushi-gi, wooden clapper also called Ki, is Kyougen producer. Odogu was in charge of Makuhiki which means closing the stage. In the Edo period, the curtain was open from the stage left and closed from right, but it became opposite now (there is an exception in some case).
