一見するとどこに地図があるのかわかりにくいが、下半分の真ん中に東を上にした日本列島が立ち上がったように描かれている。「行基図」に近い形の図形で、九州は北東部の一部分しか表されていない。
左半分に描かれているのは、1582年に明智光秀の襲撃によって織田信長が自害した本能寺の変で、右半分に描かれているのは、出島のオランダ商館長の江戸参府の事情である。イラスト・本文ともに、モンタヌスの『日本誌』を基にしている。

Chatelain's map of Japan, resembling a gyôki map, is unusual for its omission of a large part of Kyushu and its overwhelming presence of illustrations and text, both taken from Montanus' Atlas Japannensis. The left-hand panel shows the events surrounding General Akechi Mitsuhide's (1528?-1582) betrayal, and the subsequent death of his master, Oda Nobunaga (1534-1582) at Honnô-ji in Kyoto in 1582. The right-hand panel depicts Dutch envoys received in Japan in 1644. The central cartouche is a diagram detailing the succession of so-called 'emperors' from 1550 to 1658.
