この世界地図は、中国に宣教師として渡ったイタリア人のMatteo Ricci (1552-1610)が、中国で作成した地図の系統に入ると思われるもので、南半球の大半を占める南極大陸が特徴となる。ヨーロッパで作成された地図とは異なり、太平洋が地図の中心に据えられている。

This world map is modelled on that made by Italian Jesuit missionary Matteo Ricci (1552-1610) in China some 250 years previously. The southern hemisphere consists almost entirely of a great southern continent, Terra Australis. Unlike European maps made at this time, this Japanese map is centered on the Pacific Ocean.
