03.03 Urbs Nagansaki (City of Nagasaki)

German physician, Engelbert Kaempfer travelled extensively throughout Asia and his History of Japan, published posthumously in 1727, was the chief source of European knowledge about the country throughout the 18th century. While the top part of this engraving outlines the city, harbour and surroundings of Nagasaki with Dejima clearly visible in the centre, the lower part illustrates gold, silver and copper Japanese coins. During the Edo period, the shogunate directly governed Nagasaki, employing magistrates (bugyô) to do so. Across the bridge from Dejima is the western government office Gobugosio, while the eastern office can be found near Tateyama on the other side of the city.
