江戸時代、江戸城は地図だけではなく、全体図を描くことも禁じられていたので、この図を作成するに当たって日本から情報を得ることはできなかった。この図は、モンタヌスの『日本誌』から取られた物である。中国の仏教寺院の塔を思わせるような天守閣が３つそびえ立つ江戸城の鳥瞰図になっている。1657年の明暦の大火（展示番号10参照）で焼け落ちたため、この絵が描かれた1683年当時には江戸城には天守閣が存在していない。

During the Edo period (1603-1868), it was not only plans of Edo Castle, but also any faithful representation, that were forbidden to be made. This bird's-eye view of Edo Castle was created without any reliable information from Japan and first appeared in Arnoldus Montanus' (c. 1625-1683) richly illustrated book about Japan (Amsterdam; 1669). It shows three castle towers resembling Buddhist temple pagodas found in China.
