01.02 MARIS PACIFICI (Pacific Ocean)

The exaggerated size of the Kii peninsula makes up a third of the whole island of Honshu and connects directly with the northern part of the island, completely missing out Edo and the Kantô region. Made in 1590 CE, before Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616 CE) became shogun and established his government in Edo, this map ignores the existence of the Kantô region. The island to the north is the mythical Isla de Plata or 'Island of Silver'.

The prominent Latin texts describe Christian missionary zeal:
In the region of China, Japan and other neighbouring islands, there are many Christian missionaries, who have been drawn from the colonies of the New Indies, faithfully working for the Fathers of the Society of Jesus.
Japan, recently converted to Christianity.
