This is the preparatory sketch for a kuchi-e that appeared in Shin shōsetsu (New novel), a magazine that featured short stories by contemporary writers, including Natsume Söseki, Izumi Kyōka (1873-1939) and Mori Ōgai (1862-1922). The final print was used in Shin shōsetsu, nineteenth year, no. 6 ( [Shin Shōsetsu] jūkyū nen roku maki 大川「新小説」１９年６巻).

This piece includes written instructions for the printers in the margins and provides a glimpse into the working method used in the production of a print.
