We are preparing a new online exhibition. Check back here soon for new content!
Welcome to the digital museum of Nihon no hanga. Located in a 17th century canal house with Amsterdam School elements, Nihon no hanga is a private museum dedicated to showcase exhibitions created around a collection of 20th century Japanese prints, collected over 30 years by Elise Wessels.
Since 2009 Nihon no hanga has been dedicated to creating two exhibitions every year, with catalogues containing essays and prints from our collection. This digital museum is dedicated to sharing our past exhibitions and catalogue content with our online audience. We aim to release a number of exhibitions in 2021, beginning with our first exhibition 'Broad Strokes and Fine Lines', which premiered in spring of 2009. We have taken great care to correct any mistakes that have been found in our older catalogues. Please note that for this reason, these revised online descriptions may differ from those in our printed publications.
This website has been created in collaboration with the Art Research Center by Ritsumeikan University, who generously host this website and an online database containing the digital holdings of Nihon no hanga. We are greatly indebted to Prof. Akama Ryo for digitising our collection and supporting us in our vision to share our collection online.
Please enjoy our past exhibitions. We wish this website furthers the understanding of modern Japanese woodblock prints worldwide.
