The Wessels collection is still growing, adding prints from both artistic movements. Currently, some 1000 prints have been assembled, of which just under 900 date from the 20th century.
The collection's initial emphasis has been on the prints of the female form. Shin hanga artists such as Hashiguchi Goyō, Itō Shinsui, Torii Kotondo, Kobayakawa Kiyoshi, Hirano Hakuho, Komura Settai, and Kitao Tsunetomi are
well represented. Landscapes in the Shin hanga movement constitute a minority in the collection.
In the Sōsaku hanga movement, Yamamoto Kanae, Onchi Kōshirō, Kawanishi Hide, Maekawa Senpan, Koizumi Kishio, and Oda Kazuma are included with some of their best-known designs. For research purposes,
alternate states and impressions have also been collected.Of extreme interest are several complete series, including One hundred views of new Tokyo (1929-1932, various artists), One hundred pictures of great Tokyo in the Shōwa era by Koizumi Kishio, and Recollections of Tokyo (1945, various artists). Artists that can be said to belong to neither of the two movements, such as Takehisa Yumeji, also hold a prominent place in the collection.
