Tokyo Station was designed by Tatsuno Kingo (1854-1919), a student of Josiah Conder (1852-1920) and one of Japan's first great modern architects. It was the new terminus of the Tōkaidō railway, connecting Tokyo with Kyoto and Osaka. The building is a mixture of classic European styles, and its main inspiration was said to have been Amsterdam Central Station. This is the view out of the west entrance, which gives way to Marunouchi, the Kōjimachi business district.
