Faith in Humanity - Character Counts

everyday hero

I was in NYC on 9/11/2001. I was residing up in Inwood, which can be the northern most portion of Manhattan, "the tip of your island", 207th and Broadway exactly where the "A" begins and ends. I was surfing the online world at the time in my studio which overlooked the Dyckman Property, the oldest remaining farmhouse on Manhattan. My mother named me and said "They hit it! They hit the building", or a thing to that effect. I didn't possess a tv in the time so I hustled over to my nearby bar and watched the events from there. About ten minutes went by once the owner looked at me and asked me if I was drinking. I told him, "No, I just choose to watch what's happening." "If you happen to be not drinking, you'll must leave," he stated. Perhaps he was obtaining a poor day too. I paused for any moment and then quietly left the bar disgusted. I walked over to the local barbershop and asked my barber if I could watch the occasions from there since I didn't have a tv. She said, "Sure." About ten minutes went by then she asked me "Are you going to acquire a haircut?" I stated, looking to remain calm, "No, I just wish to watch what's happening". She remained quiet and I stayed for a about a different 15 minutes until I could not stand being there anymore. Truly, I could not stand getting anywhere any longer at that moment. Perhaps these persons did not recognize the severity of the situation at the time. Or possibly, inside a moment, they realized..we all realized...how helpless we actually had been and that absolutely nothing we could do or say would adjust it. Either way, I identified the expertise surreal even becoming so far away from Ground Zero. After walking about Inwood Hill Park for about an hour taking inside the morning's events, I went over to my friend's apartment. I walked in only to view the "WTC" tickets we had purchased sitting on her entry table. We had been up on the Observation Deck from the Twin Towers just two weeks prior. Slightly creepy to say the least. Beth lived near the George Washington Bridge so we were able to step outdoors and see the smoldering aftermath from there. An hour passed, we went back to her place, sitting silently on her couch watching the news for the rest with the day. Thank you Beth for just becoming there. It's been 7 years considering that 9/11. None of us will forget what happened that day but I will never forget how my faith in humanity shifted on a lot of levels not only due to what was happening downtown but in addition as a result of what I saw and experienced with some people in my neighborhood. Time heals. Slowly. My faith within the bar owner and in the barber has been restored. It wasn't out of anything they stated or did in the days or weeks soon after the occasions of 9/11. It probably had to accomplish using the fact I could not in fact live together with the believed that they acted this way each of the time, even though they did. None of us are ideal. Beth and I've lost get in touch with over the years but I'm confident she hasn't altered and that's a superb issue. What did I discover from this? Hold looking at the larger picture. Maintain searching outside of myself. Assist exactly where I can. I'll be the very first to admit its not straightforward nor do I come close to remembering to accomplish that in each and every circumstance. But it is one thing worth striving for to create life far more comfortable for the folks I are available in speak to with on a daily basis. Within the words of Michael Josephson, "Character counts."
