When I was a young lad learning how to play the violin, my music teacher was very strict in his attitude to the instrument and that we played classical pieces. For him even Mozart was a bit risqué and too modern. Fortunately for me his 13 year-old son didn't share his views and each Sunday morning after practice I would sneak upstairs to his bedroom and listen to "the devils Music." The fact was, that his son liked almost everything in the Chieftains to Emerson Lake and Palmer, and Pink Floyd. I was hooked and admit to electrifying my violin and playing in a rock band. Nowadays there is not a lot narrow-mindedness concerning the violin and we have virtuosos in just about any sphere of music. So just how versatile is the instrument?
Classical music may be the start of it all for the violin which for me may be the definitive orchestral instrument. There are so many great players that the list would fill this short article and so i will just mention Yehudi Menuhin, who was a genius.
Violins and folk music match like strawberries and ice-cream; you simply can not be sad hearing an Irish band in full swing which is great music to party to. Dave Swarbrick springs to mind when I consider this style though there are countless others.
Jean Luc Ponty took the electrical and acoustic violin to new levels in the world of jazz, and set a dark tone for modern violin jazz players to live up to. These days it is not so unusual to see violins as lead instruments for any jazz band and also the different styles within jazz itself vary from traditional to experimental.
The violin had never really taken off on the planet of pop, though using the arrival of You-tube we can observe that the net is filled with aspiring pop violinists. Jason Yang who is among the great artists features on You-tube, is at this moment on tour with Madonna and you can't get more Pop than that.
It goes without saying that violins have entered the loud and head-banging world of heavy rock and thrash metal and also the stigma of carrying a violin case these days isn't considered un-cool.
Reggae violinists? Off-hand I can not think of any so perhaps you should dust down you fiddle and set down some dub-beats.
The violin, is truly a flexible and delightful instrument.
