With diesels, the richer the mix (more fuel), the higher the power. A diesel's power is ultimately only restricted to exhaust gas temperatures and smoke. Excess EGT and smoke might be acceptable for short periods of time, but beyond that, they get rid of the engine. And that's no smoke.
