現在は文学部にいますが、2026年度より新設のデザイン・アート学部に移籍します。近世から近代に至る日本の木版印刷（木版画）技法の変遷を研究のテーマとしてる。2012年から2024年度までイギリス・大英博物館、セインズベリ―日本藝術研究所に勤務し、2017年の「Hokusai: Beyond the Great Wave」および2019年の「The Citi Exhibition Manga」に携わり、マンガ展のカタログを執筆した。
近著『Mad about Painting』（2023年）は、ニューヨーク・タイムズ紙により「2023年のベスト美術書」の一冊に選ばれている。

Ryōko Matsuba is Professor of College of Letters, and a founding committee member of the College of Arts and Design, Graduate School of Science in Arts and Design at Ritsumeikan University. Her research focuses on the evolution of Japanese woodblock printing techniques from the early modern period to the modern era.

She contributed to major exhibitions at the British Museum, including "Hokusai: Beyond the Great Wave" (2017) and "The Citi Exhibition Manga" (2019), co-authoring the catalogue for the latter. Her recent publication, "Mad about Painting" (2023), was recognized as one of the Best Art Books of 2023 by the New York Times.

【参加にあたっての抱負 Aims for taking part】
「木版画」の研究をしていながら、原材料や、和紙産業を担う人たちの事については、最近になってようやく勉強しはじめたところです。
運営として、学術側、アーティスト、伝統産業の担い手の繋がりを築いていけるきっかけになるようなワークショップになればと思います。

Although my research focuses on woodblock printing, it's only recently that I've finally begun studying the raw materials and the people who sustain the washi (Japanese paper) industry. As an organizer, I hope this workshop will serve as a case study for forging connections among academia, artists, and practitioners of traditional industries.
