Natasha is interested in art as the translation of an embodied 'event'. She works within the lexicon of marks and colour described by printmaking processes such as watercolour-inked woodcuts, thin planographic tones, carved woodgrain and lithographic brushwork. As such, her images are a material collaboration between the artist and her medium.

「身体的な出来事（embodied event）」を翻訳する行為としてのアートに関心を寄せています。彼女の作品は、水彩インクによる木版画、リトグラフ的な筆致、薄い平版印刷のトーン、木目の彫刻表現など、版画特有の痕跡と色彩の語彙の中で展開されます。そのため、彼女の作品はアーティストと素材との協働によって生まれます。

【自己紹介文 Short bio】
Natasha Norman is a visual artist who processes intuitive images of natural places in collaboration with hand-worked surfaces and materials. Her practice is print-focused and greatly influenced by the two residencies she attended in Japan to develop her knowledge of Japanese woodblock printing (Mokuhanga). Natasha graduated with an MFA from UCT's Michaelis School of Fine Art in 2011 where she continues to teach in a part-time capacity. She is the Director of Mokuhanga Kai, a society that promotes Japanese woodblock printing within South Africa, and runs her own podcast, Art to Art with Natasha, which is focused on conversations with South African artists.

ナターシャ・ノーマンは、自然の風景から得た直感的なイメージを、手作業による素材表面との対話を通じて表現するビジュアル・アーティストです。彼女の制作は版画を中心とし、日本の木版画に関する知識を深めるために参加した日本での2度のレジデンスから大きな影響を受けています。2011年にケープタウン大学マイケリス美術学校で美術修士号（MFA）を取得し、現在も同校で非常勤講師として教鞭を執っています。また、南アフリカで日本式木版画の普及を目的とする団体「Mokuhanga Kai」のディレクターを務め、南アフリカのアーティストとの対話をテーマにしたポッドキャスト「Art to Art with Natasha」を主宰しています。

【参加にあたっての抱負 Aims for taking part 】
I hope to gain a thorough understanding of washi paper which is a defining material in the process of making a Mokuhanga print. From this understanding I hope to broaden my conceptual thinking of Mokuhanga as a contemporary artistic practice and produce works that see the expansion of this medium into contemporary art spaces.

和紙は木版画制作において欠かすことのできない素材であり、その特性を深く理解することで、現代芸術としての木版画の概念的可能性をさらに広げたいと考えています。
