Aragoto and Kumadori, Actors and Emblems

"O-edo shibai nenjyu gyoji""Batsuri Cho-chin"


During Kaomise performance, Bazuri Cho-chin (hanged lantern) were hanged from a ceiling. On the lantern, the name of actor and crest were printed on and create a special atmosphere. In Kamigata, it is said that the lanterns were prepared by patrons. A stage curtain was hanged on the stage right and stand seat was set behind it.
This picture describes the moment when Ichikawa Danjuro reads out a long line called Tsurane standing at Hanamichi. Yellowish-brown Suou and big crest having of three squares called Mimasu can be seen in this picture. They contrive to show the crest bigger by opening sleeves of a costume. Special makeup for Kabuki called Kumadori and the huge wig called Ita-bin show the very essence of Aragoto.
