この図は、Louis-Léopold Boillyの息子でパリ生まれの銅版画家(Engraver)のAlphonse Boilly (1801-1867) によって作成された物である。1859年に横浜、函館と共に長崎も海外に対し港が開かれ、外国人居留地も設置されるが、Boilly自身が長崎を訪れてこれを描いたとは 考えにくい。「La Ville et de la Rade de Nagaaskki」と題するこの図とよく似た構図でもっと大きな絵がパリのMusee de la Marineに所蔵されている。Alphonse Boillyは、この絵を参考に作成したのかもしれない。

The engraver Alphonse Boilly was the youngest son of the famous French portrait painter, Louis-Léopold Boilly. In 1859 the ports of Yokohama, Hakodate and Nagasaki were opened to foreign trade and foreign concessions were established, though it is difficult to believe that Boilly ever visited any of these ports. It is likely that in creating this image, Boillly referred to a larger picture by an anonymous French artist entitled La Ville et de la Rade de Nagasaki in the Musée National de la Marine in Paris. Dejima, the Dutch trading post, can be seen in the foreground.
