Montanus' Atlas Japannensis was republished a number of times in several languages. This engraving illustrates the Great Meireki Fire of March 1657 (third year of the Meireki era) which raged for two days, sweeping trhough most of the city and resulting in more than 100,000 fatalities. The central tower of Edo Castle was burned to the ground, as were many of the outer castle buildings and the daimyo residences which surrounded the castle. The castle tower was never rebuilt.
