Since the Edo period, Shinbashi was known for its boathouses. These elegant ships were rented out, along with female attendants, for pleasure trips up and down the river. During the Meiji period, most of the establishments moved ashore, but Shinbashi remained one of Tokyo's most celebrated pleasure quarters.
