 Abstracts

“Digital Archives” is a Japanese-English term that was coined by Tokyo University Professor Emeritus Tsukio Yoshio in 1994, based on the image of the ancient Library of Alexandria. It spread across the country thanks to the Japan Digital Archives Association chaired by Hirayama Ikuo, a Japanese painter who at the time was active with the Cultural Heritage Red Cross. The concept of digital archives in recent years has proliferated into “archives” that save personal files on personal computers, “digital archives” that indicate a digital image browsing system for original materials from the National Archives of Japan, and “NHK Archives” for television programs. While looking back again at questions of what the digital archive is, as well as items related both the origins of digital archives and current digital archives, we will think about the essence of the digital archive and predict a future path for the preservation and use of digital materials.
