1. Sakabe Yumiko, “A Comparison between Generations of the Cast in Kabuki Performances”

In recent years, the ranks of Kabuki actors seem to have thinned out. We might think that this is because of an absolute decline in the number of actors or changes to the construction of the theatrical world due to the collapse of the troupe system. However, some also offer the criticism that “The young are easily performing main roles during the important period when they should be building upon their studies.” In this presentation, using a database of postwar Kabuki performances, I will compare the differences in actual roles performed by “parent” (oya) and “child” (ko) Kabuki actors, and verify the validity of that criticism.

2. Futamata Nozomi, “Genji-e drawn by Toyokuni III”

Utagawa Toyokuni III, who was famous for drawing the illustrations for Nisemurasaki Inaka Genji , left behind several Ukiyo-e series connected to Genji monogatari. Among those series created were ones that were thought to have imitated Toyokuni’s drawings. This means that we cannot ignore the connection between Toyokuni and Genji-e. In this presentation, I take up Ukiyo-e drawn by Toyokuni following the publication of Nisemurasaki Inaka Genji and discuss their connection to the work.
