Melissa Ann Dano accused of stealing $14,000

A Butler woman faces trial on charges that she promised to pay off a man's credit card bills but instead kept his money for herself.

Melissa Ann Dano, 30, surrendered last week on a felony theft charge levied by the Allegheny County district attorney's office, whose detectives said she offered to "fix" a man's bad credit history by telling him to send her more than $14,000. Ms. Dano promised to use the man's money to pay off his Bank of America credit cards, but then deposited it into her own personal bank account, investigators wrote in a criminal complaint.

The man, identified in the complaint as Kurt C. Slade of Slade Landscaping Inc., became aware of the problem last year after receiving phone calls from Bank of America telling him his payments were past due. The bank told the man it had never heard of Ms. Dano or 700 Credit, LLC., the company she purported to own and operate, the complaint says.

Ms. Dano has already waived her right to a preliminary hearing and faces trial, a spokesman for the district attorney's office said Tuesday.
