My inspiration for your post origins in a recent Podcast from the SoLoMo Show, hosted by Cory O'Brien and Adam Helweh. In my opinion, undoubtedly the very best Podcast for Social internet marketing. It covers current developments around social, local and mobile marketing and gives excellent strategies for hot online tools. It is a must for every online marketer, check it out.

Adam and Cory were discussing the meaning of a Facebook Like based on a recent case, where a deputy got fired because he liked the Facebook page from the opposition. The entire conversation went in the direction whether or not Social Media should be considered free speech. I'd rather not dive too deep in the topic but stick to the thoughts. I asked myself which meaning a Facebook Like has for myself. Which emotions, feelings and expressions do I connect with a click the famous button?

Facebook's statement concerning the Like Button

What's the Like feature?

"Like is really a method to give positive feedback or to interact with stuff you care about off or on of Facebook. You can like content that the friends post to give them feedback or just like a Page that you want to connect with on Facebook" Exactly what does it mean to "Like" something? "Clicking Like under something you or perhaps a friend posts on Facebook is a straightforward way to let someone realize that you like it, without leaving a comment."

Exactly what does it mean to love a webpage or content off of Facebook?

"When clicking Like on a Facebook Page, within an advertisement, or on content, you're making a connection. A tale regarding your like can look on your Wall (timeline) and may also come in your news feed. You might be shown on the Page you attached to, in advertisements about that Page, or in social plugins next to the content you like... Facebook Pages you like may post updates for your news feed or give back messages. Your connection to the page may also be distributed to apps around the Facebook Platform."

The official Facebook statement regarding their button is as rational as expected. The takeaway is the fact that Liking something is really a sort of positive feedback for stuff you worry about. Clicking the Like Button implies that you like an article without commenting it. Extremely important is the point that the Like appears not only by yourself timeline and in the news feed but is also shared with third-party apps. A Like isn't limited to your own Facebook community and may travel a significant long distance. Therefore, you should not underestimate the impact of the quick Like.

When would you click on the Facebook Like Button?

You will find different motives for clicking the small Button on the mouse or touchpad. Since the Facebook language changed form "Become a Fan" to "Like", it might simply mean that you want to consume a brand or perhaps a page to get the latest updates. Pages often give discounts or further insights once you liked their page. You may be really a fan from the organization, maybe it's hip to follow along with them or the action is only based on give-aways by the page you want. Clicking the Like button for a brand is a form of self-expression or public endorsement - just a few individual interpretation.

From pages, a Like may imply that you endorse a status, statement, image or comment. It does not suggest that you actually like the posted content, however, you agree with it. Basically, it is a quick and casual method to express approval and show your sympathy. For instance, liking a standing "your friend went from being in rapport into as being a single" expresses probably your concern instead of liking the separate (a minimum of in most cases).

Research from ExactTarget reveals interesting findings about the concept of a Facebook Like to users. They conclude that the Like is ambiguous and may have subtle variations in and therefore are highly determined by context and also the individual user. The research states that the Like is light-hearted, casual and fun and no commitment to anything.

"I like it, however in a different Way"

I asked some of my buddies the things they think when clicking the Facebook Like button. I got different answers. Some act intuitive simply because they enjoy a webpage or perhaps a post, others want to show support for an action or share interests using their friends. My own use of the button is quite limited. I follow some brands because I really appreciate what they're doing and that i wish to maintain their latest news. I love images and posts of friends during my network to convey that I benefit from the contributions. In my perception, Facebook is still a social network, which is intended to be entertaining and let's connect which each other. And therefore I don't put an excessive amount of weight in a Like and simply view it as a tool to talk about my interests with other people.

With regards to pages, brands or organizations, the perception of so on Button changes. Everyone should be aware that an informal click includes a future impact and doesn't stay inside Facebook. Still, brands shouldn't overstate Likes since it can have completely different motivations and suggest people offer the page or become brand advocates. There is definitely a demand for a legal framework when it comes to shares, likes and tweets in the future.

Interpreting a Like can probably end in a discussion that can last for hours. Finally, it depends a lot around the content that was liked and also the person, who liked it. I am very interested in your opinion. What do you express having a Facebook Like? How can you use the small button? I thank you for comments and, obviously, a Like for this Post...
