First off you will need some type of program, whether that is software or hardware to create the beats. In my experience of over 20 years with making beats i have tried personally both pieces - software and hardware. I still use both today. So let me talk a little bit about the Hardware side. By Hardware I am talking about physical Drum Machines, Samplers and Keyboards/Workstations that you simply touch and have fun with both hands. I first started out having a DR-660 drum machine about 18 years ago. This was my first bit of "real" studio equipment. Before then I was simply using breakbeat records on turntables and recording over a home stereo. This drum machine had stocks sounds that may be manipulated with effects like reverb and flange but you could not add sounds. You could however record patterns after which arrange those patterns into songs. I was in a position to learn a lot by utilizing that drum machine also it was good to be able to take part in the pads to hear and record the sounds. Afterwards I was able to get my on the job a Roland XP-60 Workstation and a Roland MV-8000 Sampler/Sequencer. Again this is physical hardware that you are able to experience. The XP-60 had stock sounds but tend to explore add sounds. However, the MV-8000 which is a sampler/sequencer was able to add sounds and sample. This really opened the door for creativity being able to import new sounds and sample new things. The very first software program that I used was Cakewalk, followed by Fruit Loops Studio and finally Reason by Propellerhead. I'd always liked the feel of Hardware until I acquired used to using software. In my opinion, the biggest benefit to using software programs are the price. You will get software for any third of the price you spend on hardware. If you're PC literate which a large amount of the younger generation is now, it's easier to cut, copy and paste inside the software. It was not as easy when using Hardware. Lastly you will need to have rhythm and some type of music ability. Although I had basic music composition classes while in High School, I am not a way a musician or understand how to abide by reading notes. However, I actually do have the ability to keep rhythm with a beat metronome and I am able to play melodies together with beats. No matter if you choose Hardware of Software, you will need to have the ability to keep rhythm and play in key when you build your beats.
