In 1808, Richard Trevithick, the inventor of the first working high pressure steam-powered locomotive called “Catch Me Who Can”, organised an event called “Steam Circus” around Euston Square in London. In this event, Trevithick demonstrated the possibilities of travelling faster than “animal speed” to the elite public of London and influenced the future of rail transport around the world. An object that ties this event to the Euston Square was the illustration of the event, widely believed to have been drawn by the Thomas Rowlandson. However, while it is a generally held belief that the event took place in the area around Euston Square, the exact location and description of the site still remains a topic of debate. Recently, some art historians have also started to raise doubts about the authenticity of the illustration that adds further ambiguity regarding the location of the event.  The project proposes to conduct a multi-disciplinary investigation into the location and dimension of this historically significant site.
