Not long ago i have been hearing lots of discussions about the "value" of Facebook likes, Real vs. Fake...

As usual, the majority of what I hear is wrong so I chose to do that post to set things straight...

Allow me to first start by explaining the main difference from a "real" like and a "fake" like.

A what are known as "real" like is a like that is earned the "right" way... meaning the like ended by a real individual who found real value inside your site or post or page or whatever and chose to provide you with kudos by "liking" it...

Now to the "fake" like; the fake like is really a like this is generated at all apart from what I described above...

There are a multitudes of various methods for getting a fake like, too many with this post, but here are a few:

1. Purchase like packages on microjob sites like Fiverr.com; you can purchase a few hundred to a couple thousand. These likes are almost always generated having a bot (automated software package) that games Facebook security and erroneously adds dozens to thousands of likes over days or weeks. The positive for this method is that it's cheap... the negative is the fact that bots could be sometimes be detected by Facebook security be responsible for your Facebook page being closed down. Recently Facebook announced it's intends to ramp up detection, you can read a good article about it here.

2. Purchase likes from a microworker site. This process involves buying "credits" or "tokens" on sites like Welikehits.com. These websites allow you to setup an account with your Facebook profile after which others get credits by liking your page or sharing, etc. You have to pay between $5-$100 to buy credits that you simply then "spend" when someone likes your page; you can purchase several thousand credits for $10-$25 normally. The advantage of these sites is the fact that real individuals with real accounts are liking your page, no automated script or bot... the negative would be that the way these likes come to you is thru a gateway page with a set ip address... and therefore it is very simple for Facebook to tell these were bought, and thus not count them.

Now to the big question... can there be any value at all in "fake" likes?

The reply is a convincing YES

Confused???

Let me explain...

Here are a few of the advantages of fake likes:

1. Access to Facebook Analytics. Facebook only allows you to the access the analytics portion of your control panel Once you reach 30 likes. Through getting fake likes, you can access your data faster.

2. Use of Facebook vanity URL. Facebook allows you to have a vanity URL only once you have 25 likes... the vanity URL is essential from the beginning, it enables you to definitely have facebook/yourkeyword again, fake likes provides you with access to this feature very quickly.

3. My own mail to like a webpage which has zero likes... psychologically individuals are Much more likely to click that they like button if there are already hundreds of or thousands of likes.

4. SEO value. Social signals are VERY important to SEO right now... some say as much as 1/3 of the puzzle... regardless of what the amount really is, if you do SEO you KNOW that things like followers, likes, etc play a huge role in ranking keywords on Google. If you're not able to generate these social signals the "right" way, having the fake ones is preferable to nothing.
