Whole Year 2013 Center Grant Application No.: 2013WYYR21)

Period when you used the grant: 2013/12/12 - 2013/12/12

Research activities: Overview and implications: I used the grant to buy a tablet PC (Surface Pro 2) to demonstrate and evaluate interactive study support system for analyzing historical documents published in the Edo period system. This system first analyses document images to discriminate figures, titles, and text area. This system automatically estimates and suggests feature parameters based on one or a few sample images. The user can review and adjust the parameters via the graphical user interface. Then extract each character image one by one in the text areas. The data extracted will be used in the final support system for novice learner and/or instructors.

Progress and effects in your overall research plan and objectives: The interactive system for analyzing digitized woodblock-printed Japanese historical books is proposed. This system includes stain and smear removal, background separation, character line extraction, and character extraction by region labeling with integration and separation techniques. The proposed system automatically estimates and suggests feature parameters based on one or a few sample images. The user can review and adjust the parameters via the interface. The parameters approved by the user will be applied for the rest of the pages. The data extracted will be used in the final support system for novice learner and/or instructors, and will be used for make XML representation of historical book.
