[[赤姫]] “Red Princess.”A kabuki role type: the princess roles in plays that derive from the puppet theater. The name comes from the scarlet figured satin of the long-sleeved costumes worn by actors in these roles. The red color represents amorous passion.
The three most important “Red Princess” roles are: Yaegaki [[八重垣姫]] in Honchō nijūshikō 「[[本朝廿四孝]]」, Tokihime in Kamakura sandaiki [[鎌倉三代記]] , and Yukihime [[雪姫]] in Gion sairei shinkōki [[祇園祭礼信仰記]]. Collectively, they are known as the “Three Princesses.”
