Fugaku hyakkei

The publishing history of Fugaku hyakkei may be divided into five phases:

NOTE: Changes in the colour of the covers and/or the paratexts found on the inside front and back covers do not represent new/separate editions. These are normal variations encountered in books printed repeatedly.

A. “Falcon feather” edition, Parts I & II only, 1834 & 1835.
Eirakuya Tōshirō
Kadomaruya Kinsuke
Nishimura Yohachi
Nishimura Yūzō
NOTE: Part 2 in two issues (with and without bokashi on two images).
NOTE: There is no evidence that these volumes were printed again before c.1849.

B. First printing of Parts I, II & III as a unified edition. c.1849
Eirakuya Tōshirō the sole publisher.
Mikaeshi: title sheet. Ura-mikaeshi: two-line Eirakuya colophon and advertisements for Dainihon kokugun zenzu and Kannon satta tomui no zu.
NOTE: Part III keyblocks cut c.1834; grey blocks cut c.1849.
NOTE: Assume these volumes were printed through the 1850s.

C. “Pink” edition. Newly cut blocks to print pink; recut grey blocks. c.1860.
Eirakuya Tōshirō the sole publisher.
Mikaeshi: 21-title catalogue. Ura-mikaeshi: two-line Eirakuya colophon and advertisements for Sencha hayashinan and Haikai goshichi shū.
NOTE: The Ebi copy of Part I is inscribed “Yokohama [18]61”.The same paratexts are found in early printings of Hokusai manga XIII.
NOTE: Above mikaeshi and ura-mikaeshi are also in the Ebi Manga XIII.
NOTE: Some copies: two-line Eirakuya colophon and advertisement for Teijidan. 提耳談 (堤instead of 提in Keyes).
NOTE: Was this the edition sent to Paris for the International Exposition of 1867?

D. Early Meiji ed. using the original (?) grey blocks, no pink blocks. 1875.
Eirakuya Tōshirō the sole publisher.

E. Later Meiji editions
Blocks acquired by Yoshikawa Hanshichi
Blocks acquired by Unsōdō, some or all recut.
