During the nanori characters often provide the audience with some background to situation that is about to be staged. Conventionally the nanori is performed by &#039;&#039;[[shite]]&#039;&#039; or &#039;&#039;[[shite-tsure]]&#039;&#039; while standing at the upstage right corner of the stage. This location on the noh stage is called &#039;&#039;[[nanori-za]]&#039;&#039; (also called &#039;&#039;[[jōza]]&#039;&#039;) next to the shite pillar.
