赤姫 “Red Princess.”A kabuki role type: the princess roles in plays that derive from the puppet theater. The name comes from the scarlet figured satin of the long-sleeved costumes worn by actors in these roles. The red color represents amorous passion. The three most important “Red Princess” roles are: Yaegaki 八重垣姫 in Honchō nijūshikō 「本朝廿四孝」, Tokihime in Kamakura sandaiki 鎌倉三代記 , and Yukihime 雪姫 in Gion sairei shinkōki 祇園祭礼信仰記. Collectively, they are known as the “Three Princesses.”
