The thesaurus lists nineteen synonyms for the word "empowered": accredit, allow, capacitate, charge, commission, delegate, entitle, entrust, grant, invest, legitimize, license, okay, permit, privilege, qualify, sanction, vest, and warrant. So often victimization, particularly when it happens early in life, steals the opportunity to find any sense of strength. Just how can empowerment occur once it's been stolen? I think the answer is simple. We become passionate and led by our convictions utilizing the same process involved in losing our sense of direction. Dysfunctional families model helplessness. Attitudes exude purpose and power. I've developed a four pronged approach to developing empowerment. 1. Observe and emulate: I fit in with a networking group called Networking Plus. At each meeting, each participant is given the chance to speak for sixty seconds about our businesses. All of us are excited about what we have to offer. I spent the first few weeks watching and observing other members and I learned to speak with authority. Who would like to pay attention to somebody that hangs their scalp in shame and groans in whispers when they speak? The message is not convincing when this happens. My personal favorite is "Put around the helmet of salvation, the breastplate of righteousness, the belt of truth, and also the sandals of peace." This strengthens every aspect of us. Focus on "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Think about "I am thankful in most circumstances." 3. Do daily spiritual reading and capture the passion behind every major religious tradition. To become strengthened, we need to grow into a sense of excitement about our life missions and our routine pursuits. 4. Based on Dr. Rodd Stockwell, "We all have thoughts that roll around in our head during the day. Perhaps you are a worrier, worrying about how bad the traffic will be at 5pm. Often these thoughts drop by unannounced and uninvited into our heads. They may even disturb a train of thought you were involved in." I believe of these thoughts as coming from my inner committee. They sit round the boardroom table and offer me advice about things to focus attention on. Certainly one of my committee members sounds a lot like my mother. It can be very empowering to understand that you can rearrange the seating around that table anytime. Invite helpful voices to sit down front and center-perhaps your Inner Doctor-and place those unhelpful voices in the corner where they belong. Therefore we need to talk to our committees. Before I wrote my book my committee said, "What enables you to think you can write a magazine?" Then I heard, "What enables you to think you can speak publicly?" Yes, there have been obstacles; there has been times when I figured I couldn't return to those dark times; there happen to be times when so many tears were shed that I had to put it down. But I did finish it! Dear readers, you can share your stories of developing empowerment.
